JetsRavens Lamar Jackson Baltimore shred New York The

Jackson threw five touchdown passes among only 23 throws to reinforce his front-runner status in the league MVP race as the Ravens notched their 10th straight victory and improved to 12-2. They could secure a first-round bye in the AFC playoffs this weekend with a loss by either the New England Patriots or Kansas City Chiefs. The Ravens would clinch the AFC’s No. 1 seed if both the Patriots and Chiefs lose Sunday.

It became official that Jackson, the second-year sensation taken 29 spots after Jets quarterback Sam Darnold in the opening round of the 2018 NFL draft, is the most dynamic runner with the football ever to play quarterback in the NFL. He ran for 86 yards on eight carries Thursday and now has 1,103 rushing yards this season, 64 more than Vick’s 1,039 for the Atlanta Falcons in 2006.

“It’s pretty cool,” Jackson told Fox after the game. “I don’t know when I broke it. ... I was trying to be locked in the whole, entire game. The goal is to win, not break a record, where I’m from. But I’m happy and my teammates are happy for me. It’s Michael Vick. So it’s amazing. I’m grateful.”

Jackson had been listed as questionable on the Ravens’ injury report with a quadriceps injury but started, as expected, and broke Vick’s record on the Ravens’ opening possession.

Former Ravens coach Brian Billick wrote on Twitter early in the game: “Jets just got realization that every other opponent had this season ... whoever played ‘scout team Jackson’ during the week doesn’t do it any justice.”

Jackson had 64 first-half rushing yards on five carries. That prompted Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to write on Twitter: “Me vs Lamar, 40 Yard Dash on natural grass but he has to wear rollerblades. Who’s buying the PPV?”

But it always was clear that Jackson was a gifted runner with the ball. What has made him so special this season has been his rapid development as an NFL passer, that after some questioned before he entered the league whether he should be moved to wide receiver.

Jackson’s five touchdown passes matched his single-game career high, accomplished three times this season, and were thrown to five different receivers: wideouts Miles Boykin, Marquise Brown and Seth Roberts, tight end Mark Andrews and tailback Mark Ingram. Jackson leads the NFL with 33 touchdown passes this season.

“It’s really something that I’m sure Lamar, as he says, he’ll look back on some day fondly,” Ravens Coach John Harbaugh said at his postgame news conference. “But right now he’s got other things to think about.”

The familiar chants of “M-V-P! M-V-P” filled M&T Bank Stadium and Jackson, who completed 15 of 23 passes for 212 yards, gave way to backup Robert Griffin III during the fourth quarter.

“Man, he’s special, man,” Ingram said as he stood alongside Jackson during a postgame interview with Fox. “I’ve been telling y’all since I don’t know how many weeks ago that he’s the MVP front-runner. But now I’m gonna tell y’all he is the MVP. You know what I mean? He’s great. He does everything necessary to be a great QB. He puts it all on the line for his teammates. Humble. And we’re blessed, man. We’re thankful. We’re happy for him. And we’re just gonna keep going.”

Ingram also ran for a touchdown for the Ravens.

“They’re that fast,” Jets Coach Adam Gase said of the Baltimore offense. “They run their offense well. ... You’ve got to make a decision in real time. It’s not easy.”

Darnold threw a pair of touchdown passes to wide receiver Jamison Crowder for the Jets, who also scored a touchdown on a blocked punt. But Darnold threw an interception and lost a fumble. The Jets had a field goal blocked and missed an extra point. They failed to convert on fourth and one from the Baltimore 7-yard line with the game still competitive in the first half. The Jets’ hopes for a .500 season were extinguished as they dropped to 5-9.

But this night wasn’t about Jets’ failures. It was about the ongoing brilliance of Jackson and the Ravens. They clearly are the team to beat in the AFC playoffs and perhaps in the entire NFL postseason. Jackson has won two division titles in his two NFL seasons since Ozzie Newsome, the former general manager of the Ravens, made him the final player chosen in the first round of last year’s draft.

Harbaugh turned over the team to Jackson last season and has allowed the young quarterback to be himself. The Ravens said farewell to Joe Flacco, their former Super Bowl-winning quarterback, in the offseason. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman designed an offensive system in which Jackson can thrive. His teammates clearly like and respect him.

And when Ingram was allowed to ask Jackson a question during their shared TV interview after the game, Jackson made it clear in his response that he and the Ravens are growing increasingly convinced a Super Bowl title will be theirs in this ever-more-gratifying season.

“We’ve got a lot of season left to play,” Jackson said. “We’ve got two more banners to hang up.”

Jets get TD

It’s probably cosmetic now but the Jets scored on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Sam Darnold to wide receiver Jamison Crowder. They added a two-point conversion even after a five-yard delay-of-game penalty. (Ravens 42, Jets 21 with 7:35 left in the 4th quarter)

Touchdown No. 5 for Jackson

Lamar Jackson matched his single-game career high with his fifth touchdown pass, a 10-yarder to tailback Mark Ingram. They’ve been thrown to five different receivers. The Ravens capitalized on a short field after a failed onside kick by the Jets. The familiar “M-V-P! M-V-P!” chants are filling the stadium in Baltimore and surely Jackson’s night is finished. (Ravens 42, Jets 13 with 9:58 left in the 4th quarter)

Jets get TD on blocked punt

The Jets scored on a blocked punt. Tarell Basham blocked Sam Koch’s kick and B.J. Bello scooped up the loose football and scored the touchdown. The Ravens were punting only because Lamar Jackson missed open tight end Mark Andrews for what might have been his fifth touchdown pass of the night. What was Jackson still doing in the game? The Ravens’ possession began after the Jets appeared to recover a muffed punt by the Ravens. But the officials ruled that the ball never had hit a Ravens player and that call was allowed to stand, perhaps erroneously, on instant replay. The Jets missed the extra point on their touchdown. (Ravens 35, Jets 13 with 12:07 left in the 4th quarter)

Fourth TD pass for Jackson

Lamar Jackson’s fourth touchdown pass of the game came on a 33-yard strike to wideout Seth Roberts. The Ravens extended the drive by converting on fourth and one from their own 29-yard line with a 36-yard completion from Jackson to tight end Mark Andrews. It was the Ravens’ 16th successful fourth-down try in 21 attempts this season. (Ravens 35, Jets 7 with 58 seconds left in the 3rd quarter)

Darnold’s fumble leads to Jackson’s third TD pass

The Ravens cashed in on a fumble lost by Sam Darnold with Lamar Jackson’s 24-yard touchdown pass to rookie wide receiver Marquise Brown, who made a nice catch in the back of the end zone and managed to get his feet in bounds. It was the third touchdown pass of the night for Jackson. The Ravens’ offense actually had been sputtering a bit since its fast start to the game. But Darnold helped out with his second turnover of the game. The Ravens scored on the second play after the fumble, with Jackson throwing an incompletion on the first play. (Ravens 28, Jets 7 with 5:09 left in the 3rd quarter)

Jets toughen on defense

The Jets are faring far batter on defense after surrendering touchdowns on each of the Ravens’ first three possessions of the night. The Ravens haven’t scored since. They punted on their final possession of the first half (not counting a one-play “drive” just before the intermission) and have punted on each of their first two possessions of the second half. (Ravens 21, Jets 7 with 5:21 left in the 3rd quarter)

Halftime in Baltimore

The Ravens were dominant on offense early and lead the Jets, 21-7, at halftime in Baltimore on a night when Lamar Jackson broke Michael Vick’s single-season NFL record for rushing yards by a quarterback.

Jackson began the night 22 yards shy of Vick’s record of 1,039 yards for the Atlanta Falcons in 2006. That mark fell on the Ravens’ opening drive of the night.

Former Ravens coach Brian Billick wrote on Twitter early in the game: “Jets just got realization that every other opponent had this season … whoever played ‘scout team Jackson’ during the week doesn’t do it any justice.”

Jackson had 64 first-half rushing yards on five carries. That prompted New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to write on Twitter: “Me vs Lamar, 40 Yard Dash on natural grass but he has to wear rollerblades. Who’s buying the PPV?”

The Ravens scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions of the game. Tailback Mark Ingram had a touchdown run and Jackson threw touchdown passes to wide receiver Miles Boykin and tight end Mark Andrews.

The Jets did their best to stay in the game. They scored on a touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Darnold to wide receiver Jamison Crowder. But the Jets squandered their chances to score more points. They missed a field goal. They failed on a fourth-and-one try from the Baltimore 7-yard line. Darnold threw an interception to end a possession that began at the Baltimore 41.

The Ravens are trying to extend their winning streak to 10 games and can clinch the AFC North title with a victory. (Ravens 21, Jets 7 at halftime)

December 12, 2019 at 9:43 PM EST

Darnold throws pick

The Jets squandered another scoring chance when Darnold threw a pass directly to Ravens safety Chuck Clark for an interception. The ended a drive that began at the Baltimore 41-yard line after the Jets finally forced a Ravens’ punt. (Ravens 21, Jets 7 with 18 seconds left in the 2nd quarter)

December 12, 2019 at 9:35 PM EST

Jets fail on fourth down

The Jets failed on a fourth-and-one try from the Baltimore 7-yard line. Darnold, under heavy pressure, lobbed a pass into the end one to wide receiver Robby Anderson, but cornerback Jimmy Smith knocked the football away. Smith wrapped his arms around Anderson while making the pass breakup. But pass interference wasn’t called and there was no reversal on replay. The Jets kept the ball for 13 plays and took nearly eight minutes off the clock but didn’t get points. (Ravens 21, Jets 7 with 1:54 left in the 2nd quarter)

December 12, 2019 at 9:18 PM EST

Ravens are unstoppable

Make it three possessions and three touchdowns for the Ravens. Jackson threw a one-yard touchdown pass to Andrews. A defensive pass interference penalty on the Jets, with Neville Hewitt dragging down wide receiver Marquise Brown on a deep pass to the end zone, gave the Ravens a first down at the 1-yard line. A Jackson-to-Andrews touchdown was negated by an illegal formation called on the Ravens. But they got those five yards back on a run by Ingram and, after the Jets jumped offside twice and angered the Ravens with the free shots they were getting on Baltimore’s offensive linemen, Jackson found Andrews again. The Ravens added a two-point conversion to make up for their earlier missed extra point. (Ravens 21, Jets 7 with 9:43 left in the 2nd quarter)

December 12, 2019 at 9:06 PM EST

Jets strike back

The Jets got on the board with a touchdown drive that was all about Darnold and wide receiver Crowder. On a third-and-nine play from midfield, Darnold escaped the pocket to his right and connected with Crowder for a 41-yard catch and run to the Baltimore 9-yard line. On second down from the 4-yard line, the Ravens blew a coverage and left Crowder wide open in the end zone, but when Darnold delivered an on-target throw, Crowder somehow dropped the pass. No matter. On the next play, Darnold moved to his right and zipped another throw to Crowder, who made a far more difficult catch for the touchdown, overcoming tight coverage by Baltimore’s Marlon Humphrey and managing to get his feet in bounds along the sideline. (Ravens 13, Jets 7 with 13:27 left in the 2nd quarter)

December 12, 2019 at 8:52 PM EST

Ravens add to lead

The Ravens are making it look easy in the game’s early going, with two touchdowns on two possessions. Lamar Jackson threw a five-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Boykin one play after showing his dazzling speed on a 25-yard run. Kicker Justin Tucker missed the extra point, however, just Tucker’s third career miss on an extra point. He’s now 289 for 292, with two of the misses coming this season. (Ravens 13, Jets 0 with 2:50 left in the 1st quarter)

December 12, 2019 at 8:46 PM EST

Jets miss FG

The Jets had their chance to get on the board but kicker Sam Ficken had a 49-yard field goal attempt partially deflected and the football fell short. (Ravens 7, Jets 0 with 5:09 left in the 1st quarter)

December 12, 2019 at 8:39 PM EST

Lamar Jackson breaks record on opening TD drive

It didn’t take long for Jackson to break Michael Vick’s single-season NFL record for rushing yards for a quarterback. Jackson did so on the Ravens’ opening drive of the night, which ended in a touchdown. He ran for 27 yards on the drive, bringing his total for the season to 1,044 yards (and counting) and breaking Vick’s record of 1,039 yards, set for the Atlanta Falcons in 2006. Jackson had a 20-yard run on the drive and the Ravens scored on a six-yard run by tailback Mark Ingram. (Ravens 7, Jets 0 with 5:12 left in the 1st quarter)

Big night possible for Ravens, Lamar Jackson

The Ravens are closing in on securing the top seed in the AFC playoffs and their standout second-year quarterback, Lamar Jackson, is the front-runner for the league’s MVP award. It could be a big night for Jackson and his team when the Ravens host the Jets on Thursday to get Week 15 of the NFL season underway.

The Ravens are on a nine-game winning streak that has improved their record to 11-2. They already have clinched a playoff spot and can secure the AFC North title with a victory over the Jets. It’s possible that the Ravens, with a win Thursday, could clinch a first-round playoff bye or even the No. 1 seed as soon as this weekend, based on the results of the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs; clinching a bye would require a loss by one of those teams and clinching the top seed would require losses by both.

Jackson is listed as questionable on the injury report because of a quadriceps injury, but is expected to play. He begins the night with 1,017 rushing yards on the season, putting him 22 yards shy of the single-season NFL record for a quarterback set by Michael Vick for the Atlanta Falcons on 2006.

The Ravens rank first in the league in rushing offense and scoring offense. The Jets have the NFL’s second-ranked rush defense. But safety Jamal Adams and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, two of the team’s top defenders, are listed as doubtful on the injury report.

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold will have to show poise against Baltimore’s pass rush. Running back Le’Veon Bell returns to the lineup after missing Sunday’s narrow triumph over the Miami Dolphins. He was ruled out of that game because of the flu but reportedly was spotted at a New Jersey bowling alley Saturday night.

The victory over the Dolphins, achieved on a field goal that came after an instant replay reversal of a pass interference non-call against Miami, kept alive the Jets’ hopes for a .500 season. They enter this game with a record of 5-8.
